The Leipzig class is a slightly modified version of the Königsberg class. Compared to Königsberg class, their armour, bridge, and main gun designs are improved. Leipzig was severely damaged by British submarines at the beginning of WWII in 1939. After she was repaired she was mainly used for training. 1944 she had a collision with Prinz Eugen. Toward the end of WWII Leipzig was mainly used for gunfire support against land targets and defense against Soviet Union’s Red army. Soon after the surrender of Germany, Leipzig was scuttled in July 1946 after being used for mine sweeping.
Leipzig could only travel at 6 knots when she was carrying refugees. Despite this, she still survived the Soviet aircraft and two submarine torpedo attempts.
She was used as a barracks ship for men of the German Mine Sweeping Administration.
